In my immediate family I am known as the camp counselor. In this role I love to come up with our activities for the weekend. Recently, Iāve been on a kick of trying to find the coolest playgrounds for my 2 year old that are with in a 30 minute driving distance. I like to parlay that into finding a nearby interesting lunch, coffee, or bakery spot to try. Life sure does come at you fast.
I especially like playing this counselor role when I am visiting a new city. However, I find it is easy to be overwhelmed by the number of recommendations from disparate sources. Personally, I prefer to have only a few of the highest quality recommendations from authentic sources (e.g. Reddit, not Yelp).
Iāve come up with a format called a āFABRICā guide, an acronym for Food, Activities, Booze, Restaurants, Institutions, and Coffee. I use trusted sites like Reddit, Infatuation, Google Reviews, and yes, random wedding websites, to curate what Iāve triangulated as the top 3 recommendations per category. Each recommendation is added to a list on google maps so you can see where they are in relation to one another. My hope is this single-page format limits decision anxiety and allows you to spend your time and money on only the highest quality recommendations.
Iām headed to Austin, Texas š¤ this weekend for a wedding and put a guide together. My Austin people, how did I do? Do you like this format?
Without further adoā¦.
Why Tucker?
Tucker came highly recommended by our mutual friend Andrew Ketner. Andrew told me how Tucker was doing interesting work with his platform Tucks Travels and his partnership with Athletic Brewing.

Subtract by Leidy Klotz - The Untapped Science of Less
The main idea of this book is very simple yet very powerful at the same time. Subtraction is about achieving an end result that is less. Getting to less doesn't mean we're doing less; rather, it's quite the opposite.
I'll leave you with two lines from the book I enjoyed.
Da Vinci defined perfect as when there is nothing left to take away.
To attain knowledge, add things every day. To attain wisdom, subtract things every day.
Brand
I'm a bit biased as I'm currently a brand ambassador for Athletic Brewing but this recommendation serves so many other parts of life I'd recommend: Reducing alcohol consumption, prioritizing sleep, more fulfilling mornings, more fulfilling relationships. When is the last time you made a decision you regret sober?
Well-Being
Stretching
Place a yoga mat out on the floor the night before you go to bed. Just that one act makes you so much more likely to stretch in the morning.
Professional
Professional Coach
Most people reading this are likely high performers that don't really need a lot of help, but that's exactly why I think working with a professional is so important. Seeing a therapist can be highly beneficial but I've found a good trusted professional development coach can fit those needs and serve so many others. Diagnose where you get your energy and how you give it to others.
I've worked with and highly recommend Milam Miller.
Music
Part of Kygo's "Palm Tree Crew" this duo from Southern California have the perfect tropical house/indie vibe for your next car ride, ski trip, run or splitting a bottle of red with that someone special on Valentine's Day š
Travel
UK, Scotland and Ireland
More likely three separate trips and great for families or solo travelers - golfers paradise
The Manor House, Castle Combe - Really the entire Cotswolds region and English countryside. Look on your google map and you will see AONB which stands for Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (so British) and it lives up to the designation. The pub culture is unparalleled and the service reminds you of good southern hospitality. Go in the summer and experience punting down the river or go see a match at Wimbledon before you go to Heathrow.
On the more posh end - Ashford Castle. Ireland's west coast is one of the most magical experiences and there are very few places like Ashford. If you are visiting Ireland, do a very quick stop in Dublin and get to coast!
Edinburgh is incredible but I can't recommend going to the Scottish Highlands enough. We stayed near Fort William, road the Hogwarts Express train, drank some amazing scotch and did some world class hiking.

P.S. I made a mistake on my google form linked below and here. I forgot to include a field to share your name/email. Several of you added in recommendations for me to profile but now I donāt know who to ask for help connecting (facepalm). Would you mind re-submitting? Thank you!
More FABRIC guides!! can vouch for some of these Austin spots and would be fun to have a collection of these for trip plans and those of us who are camp counselors but with different planning strengths.
