📝 Editor’s Note
I have always been easy to gift for. As long as any item had a Carolina Panther logo on it, it was a home run.
Now my latest collectible gifting request is historic maps. I especially love maps of the southeast from the 19th century, detailed city maps, and coastal maps. Google maps might be my most used app.
One day I’d love to have a map room. Dark wood panels on the wall with at least one big window. Sliding ladder for the 15 foot tall wraparound bookshelf. Rare and unique maps framed on one wall. Maybe even a secret entrance protected by keypad entry. A large wooden table in the middle of the room — used to review large maps as well as for the study hall I’ll host nightly for myself and my kids. Just joking, well sort of….
Without further ado….
Why Marshall?
While we have yet to meet in person, Marshall and I have several mutual friends. I was grateful that she made profile recommendations and I wanted to take her up on one too. Several really interesting recommendations!

Self-Description
A people connector, I thrive on hosting celebrations, fundraisers, dinner parties, and experiences. With a knack for making meaningful introductions—whether for new friends, first dates, or professional networking—I love bringing people together. Recently, I transitioned from New York City to Washington, DC to grow my career at a relationship-focused asset management firm. Here, I get to do what I love: make connections, focus on strategic growth, and create unique experiences for both colleagues and clients, especially those centered on community impact.
Marshall’s 6 Recommendations
Written in her own words…
1. Clearly Collective
Check out my girl Liv's amazing silk scarves from her architectural designs of places such as UVA’s Rotunda (above). Brands I also like:
Presley Goode Art: my wonderful friend Presley’s work - check out the cozy pajamas!
Mochi: a cool sustainable brand out of Amsterdam
Lilly Sisto at Dillard’s: another impressive friend, with talent and style!
Tuckernuck: always been a mega fan, love that it was founded by three sisters
2. Power Forward by Reggie Love
I love books on life lessons from inspiring individuals. A few of my favorites:
The story of my friend and mentor Reggie Love, the Duke basketball and football player who became President Obama's personal aid and the person who spent the most time with him while in office. Great for anyone who loves to learn about the leaders behind the leaders.
Rethinking Success: Eight Essential Practices for Finding Meaning in Work and Life by Doug Holliday
Lessons from another friend and mentor Doug Holliday. This book highlights how meaningful it can be to not let "your light go out" by continuing to find purpose in work and life. Excellent for all!
The Defining Decade by Meg Jay
One that helped me (and many friends) navigate my twenties but really it's great advice for any age. A great gift for college students or anyone pondering next steps.
Where the Light Gets In by Kimberly Williams Paisley
I came across this book while working at The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Disease. A great story from Brad Paisley's wife, and Father of the Bride's Annie, on caring for loved ones, going through tough times and the importance of family.
Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey
Because it's Matthew McConaughey and he has great philosophies on life!
3. Mad Men
When I was looking for my first job in New York City, a woman I interviewed with rounded out my interview with “Have you seen Mad Men?”. I had not. She said “Before you move here, I encourage you to watch it, everyone working in NYC should”. It’s become my all time favorite show. I also recommend:
The Kennedy’s TV Series - with Greg Kinnear and Katie Holmes.
The Emperor's Club — for those who haven't seen it, such a great watch especially for high school students
A Complete Unknown – I’ve always loved Bob Dyaln, cried at this one.
It's a Wonderful Life — because it never get's old, no matter the time of year.
4. Stissing House Restaurant
Last year, I went to Upstate New York to celebrate a friend's 30th Birthday. We had the most incredible meal and all around experience at Stissing House. Highly recommend, it's worth the trip!
Also, stumbled into Bill’s Oyster on a recent work trip to Austin, TX. Best burger and martini I’ve had in awhile!
5. Warm Springs, Virginia
I grew up spending time in Warm Springs, Virginia. It's one of my favorite places in the world, with it's quaint feel, friendly locals and stunning hills. If you're so lucky to spend some time there, be sure to check out The Dairy Barn for lunch, The Grismill Inn for drinks, Fort Lewis Lodge for dinner and The Homestead Coffee Shop for doughnuts.
6. Kindred App
Kindred app, I love it! Think house swapping from the movie The Holiday; you apply (it’s easy!), put your home on the app and then you receive requests from folks on the app to stay in your home. You receive a credit for every time a traveler stays in your home, each credit can be used for a night in another home – hundreds of gorgeous homes all over the world!. The best part is Kindred sends house cleaners on either side of the stay, new linens and even toiletries. I’ve hosted some wonderful travelers in my Washington, DC spot and I’ve stayed in charming homes in New York City, Chicago and Amsterdam.

P.S. from Rambull — No financial disclaimers this week. My sister Anna recently shared a website called Thrift Books. It is an impressive online marketplace to purchase lightly used books. This is also a great resource for parents looking to buy kids’ books.
Love this!! Going to add Marshall’s book recs and Anna’s book biz to my February list of this to research :)
And maps, love maps! I have my husband a framed map of the spot where he proposed many years ago as a gift. A map room sounds decadent.
I am obsessed with maps too and want a map room! Pretty sure you actually showed me how to save places on Google Maps way back in the day? Anyways, check out Carolina Antique Maps & Prints in Charleston for cool antique maps.
Power Forward also just purchased for my Duke-loving (gross) brother in law's bday. TY!
