📺 TV Show or Movie
Trendy? Who cares. Old news? Nah, enduring. Available on Netflix.
Martha and I randomly came across this show on PBS one Sunday afternoon about 8 years ago and never looked back. Regardless of the season you choose, the dynamic between the hosts, judges and bakers is always light-hearted, witty, supportive, inspirational and educational all at the same time.
We love the show because it's not super-competitive like other shows are forced to become, and all of the contestants are supportive of one another. You also can learn a ton about baking and some things you've never even imagined are created before you on the screen.
🛒 Consumer Product
I call them Oreos to keep it simple. I first saw these advertised as recovery flops for runners and picked up a pair when I was at the beach about 6 years ago (not a runner, btw). And although you look like a geriatric patient wearing them, your feet, ankles and knees will love you. Also, for a recovering rainbow wearer (thanks, Woodberry) and Chaco enthusiast (perfect for a spring afternoon hack-sesh in Sewanee), these kick ass. It's basically like walking on a cloud the Care Bears would live in.
📞 Phone App or Digital Product
This is an app that collaborates with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in providing data for bird habitats, migration and density patterns.
Have you ever heard birdsong and wondered what kind of bird you're listening to? This app can help you identify not only from sight and a description of the bird, but also by a sound ID option that gives you instant results as to the kind of bird and specific kind of call you're listening to. I've been able to identify the different Cardinal calls over a few weeks using this app and am now trying to master the Carolina Wren and American Robin.
For those interested in going a step deeper, Stuart also shared the migration dashboard. Last Friday almost 10,000 birds flew across Mecklenburg county!
💪 Habit or Lifestyle Routine
A guy named Ryder Carroll developed this method and it pretty much combines mindfulness practice with being productive. I've been using this method for about 6 years now and it's become an integral part of my day. A lot of what people associate with journaling can be off-putting -- the time it takes, I don't want to handwrite, I don't know what to journal about -- but this method simplifies everything so that you can pretty much be more efficient, get to know yourself better and more intimately, and have another routine point for your day.
It's also helped me acknowledge and verify feelings that I'm afraid of or too nervous to mention out loud, and so it can be meditative and healing in that way as well. The foundation of this method is through a paper journal, but you can also digitize the practice as well. Tons of Youtube vids you can scroll through to get the hang of it.
📝 Content
Herman Wouk's World War 2 Historical Fiction Novels:
The Winds of War
War and Remembrance
Winds of War starts with the Nazi invasion of Poland and ends right after Pearl Harbor, and War and Remembrance picks up with the US's entrance into the war and ends after the bombs are dropped. Unforgettable characters, incredible drama, military detail and focus and thoroughly researched -- it's all there. Definitely not a beach read but worth the effort!
🥉 Honorable Mention
Lance Armstrong's "The Move" podcast focused on professional bike racing
Much like his Texas roots and his reputation as an athlete, he takes a very cavalier and maverick approach to the content. You'll either love it or hate it. For hardcore cycling enthusiasts who prefer more of an intellectual and cultural immersion into the sport of professional men's and women's road cycling, check out The Cycling Podcast, hosted by journalists Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe.

My Rambulls - what I’ve been recently rambling about…...
💧 Hydration: Liquid IV Hydration Multiplier + Immune support - we take these every day; especially if we’ve tipped the bottle the night before. I’m fascinated by their business. I did not think there was room to compete nor did I think that people would be open to a new brand after the airborne scandal. But the founders came up with an incredible name and said Emergen-C, hold my drink.
👟 Hokas: I just got them for my birthday (S/O mom - thank you!). I used to be a hater but wow, they feel incredible during long runs. Douglas Gabbert, this is my public apology for making fun of you for wearing these 4 years ago. You were the early adopter and clearly a trendsetter of the Brooks Brothers button down, pleated khakis, and Hokas look….Next thing you know I’m gonna be wearing Stu’s Oofas.
